Mazabuka Mumblings Polo Season Ends The Polo season ended in Maz with the Ladies International between Zim and Zambia at Lubombo and the annual Polocrosse tournament. Congratulations to Charmaine Clayton and the Zambian ladies who defeated the neighbouring Zim team. The Polocrosse tournament which normally attracts players from far and wide ended in a fast and exciting final between a team of die-hard polo players from Maz and a fairly new, but very well practised team of polocrosse players from Lusaka South who beat the local team in an exciting end to the horsy season. Drop In for a cup of coffee or tea at the newly opened and decorated Maz Turf Club Coffee Shop. Open in the morning on Pre-school days which are Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Don't forget the inter-denominational church services that are held at the Club every Sunday at 8.30 a.m. Diarise: Saturday November 29! Theresa Taylor is organising a fun filled evening at Maz Club with skits from "willing" members of all the local sports clubs.
A Future In Design An Technology? Bhagoos Supermarket recently sponsored a "scrap art / invention" competition on Nakambala Estate and it was interesting to see what designs people came up with : From hats, bowls of flowers and Christmas trees to cane haulage vehicles, hand scales and fans! It was encouraging to see how many children on the estate entered the competition and the quality of work that they put on display. Many of them had been off school because of the national strike so they would have had time to give careful thought to what they could produce out of nothing much but plastic wire and tin. The overall winner of the competition, fourteen year old Brian Sitali, produced a cleverly designed desk fan out of nothing but scrap and batteries. It works perfectly and so does the little sewing machine that he has invented since. It would be wonderful to know that someone like Brian was going to be nurtured and encouraged in something that he is so obviously talented in. He is a small but indisputable asset to Zambia.
The Kafue Hospital Is Up And Running! Twenty years ago it was a dream. Today it's a reality thanks to Kafue's determined MPU (Micro Projects Unit) under the chairmanship of Guffar Hussein. The hospital was sponsored by the Italian Community, the European Union (biggest sponsors) the Japanese Government and Zambia's British High Commission. It was built by the local community who organised fund raising events to supply the river sand, the blocks and the labour and transport. Apparently it is the first community health centre in this part of the world in which a local community have been totally involved in creating. The hospital, which boasts a maternity section, x-ray facilities, casualty and men's women's and children's wards will, when fully operational, be able to take in 168 patients. |
