Farmers’ Wives Working Hard

Farmers’ wives in the Southern Province have been hard at it this year – producing artwork for sale and will be holding an exhibition/sale in time for Christmas (see Wot’s Happening section).

The first of the two independent groups of artists are the well-known Kalcho Group from the small towns of Kalomo and Choma, headed by Elaine Danckwerts and Eva Middleton. They have recently celebrated their 10th year at the easels, meeting consistently once a week during all of that time. A truly remarkable achievement, with work still being produced at a prodigious rate.

The second group from Mazabuka, took their inspiration from the first, and are headed by Rory McDougall and Alison Street. In a very short time they have achieved remarkable results with a number of "first timers" selling very well at the last Musikili Art Exhibition. They too meet weekly, and have been operating for just short of a year.

Generally all group members try to exhibit regularly at local exhibitions and some exhibit internationally as well.

So, this will be a great opportunity to find that something special for a Christmas gift. Not all works will be framed, to enable gifts to be sent away, and latitude in cost.
