A Tribute To David Simpson

Today, as  this issue of the Lowdown was going to press, I received the news that my colleague, David Simpson, had passed on.

I first met David in the early 90’s when he was the Editor of Profit magazine. A few years later, Profit moved into the same office block as myself. During this  time, David and I had many discussions  regarding business in general in Zambia, and transport in particular; the industry in which I was employed at the time.

When becoming involved with the Lowdown almost four years ago, I suddenly realised that with my lack of journalistic training, I needed some serious help. It was to David that I turned, relying on him not only for the articles which covered business/economic  issues, but also for advice on legal issues specific to the press. He always gave his advice readily.

From this, developed a relationship which worked very well – every month we would get together for an hour or so and discuss various issues which we felt should be followed up and David would go away with a list of issues to deal with. Sometimes, later on in the month, something would come to my attention and I would get on the phone to David and always on deadline, the articles would arrive via email.

I shall miss our monthly discussions; I shall also miss David’s reliability and his ability to get to the core of the issue. I am sure readers will miss his well researched articles.

To David’s wife and son, we offer our deepest sympathy.
