Baobab Sevens

In July last year, Baobab College embarked on its first international sporting tour. Through the assistance of sponsors; Kobil, Holiday Inn, GEM Schoolwear (SA) and DCDM. as well as funds raised themselves, the College’s Rugby team went on a ten day tour of Maun in Northern Botswana. Having beaten the third best school in Botswana, Maun Secondary,  66-0 on their own pitch (which was remarkably similar to a large sandpit) unfortunately the other schools that were due to play them pulled out of the fixtures. The tour organizers were left with no option but to arrange a fixture against the local adult rugby team which contained no less than three current Botswana national team players. This proved to be an education for the boys as they had to dig deep within themselves to run out winners 13-0. The performances of the College (winning seventeen of their nineteen games last season) has earned them an invitation to the prestigious Prince Edward Festival in Harare. Sadly the boys will be unable to attend due to the fact that their IGCSE’s and A-Level exams begin at that time.

This year the College are intending to go further afield, with a tour to Durban, South Africa in early July. GEM Schoolwear have already pledged to renew their partnership with the team and again, the team is embarking on another fundraising drive. This will kick off with the second Baobab College Touch Rugby 7’s tournament on Saturday 20th March.

Last year saw twelve teams take to the field in this tournament aimed ostensibly at people who consider themselves to be nearing or indeed already in the ‘madala’ stage of their sporting careers. Games were played on half pitches and lasted for seven minutes a half.  Most of the teams had some Under 19 players to assist the older bones. Their were also several corporate teams who participated including Turner Construction who won the Shield competition and Armcor Security who lost in the final of the Main Cup competition to a strong and competitive Gymkhana team. A lot of fun was had by all who attended and the rain almost kept away!

This year’s event will hopefully be bigger and better. It will be held on the same day as the College’s Easter Fair which will guarantee a fun family day out. Footage from last years tour, sandpit included, will be shown in the beer tent throughout the day. First game is likely to be around 10am with the finals at 3 pm. The entrance fee is K50,000 per team and all who come through the gates will have to pay K5,000 whether they are playing or not. Registration forms and further details can be obtained from Jon Turner at Baobab College, on  01 278-793/6 or 096-720956.
