Something To Look Forward To!

The Embassies of the member states of the European Union, their respective cultural institutions and the Delegation of the European Union are organisinge, as in previous years, the European Film Festival.

Being an expression of cultural exchange between Zambia and the European Union, this years’ festival will be held from Friday May 14 up to Thursday May 20. Traditionally, the festival will be opened with the contribution of the Presidency, Ireland and closed with the contribution of the Delegation of the EU.

As it is already the fourth European Film Festival in succession, it is time for some changes.

Firstly, its location: as Lusaka now has a fully-fledged cinema at its disposal, all film shows can be seen in the Ster-Kinekor complex. And at a reduced entrance fee of K 5,000 per show. Also contrary to other years, tickets will be only available at the booking-office of Ster-Kinekor. Secondly, in order to make the Festival even more attractive, short theatrical performances will take at intervals during the Festival, alternating between Augustin Lungu and Benne Banda in conjunction with UNZA students. Finally, coverage of the Festival will be given on ZNBC (Kwacha Good Morning) and UNZA Radio as well as publicity programmes on Radio Phoenix, Radio Four, Radio Choice and Q-FM.

Other things remain the same - the children’s programme over the weekend and interesting films such as Denmark’s first contribution to the Festival, Lars von Trier’s “Dogville” and England’s “Love Actually”.

The traditional brochure (with the exact programme and details on all films shown) will be available shortly at the Ster-Kinekor complex and the participating Embassies and Honorary Consulates (Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden), British Council & Alliance Francaise and the Delegation of the European Union.

A new, and very important, element of the Festival will be a four day training on film production. This will be sponsored by the EU-funded Cultural Sector Support Programme (EU - CSSP), and will include training in pitching, film production, editing and continuity. Target participants (to be handpicked by the EU- CSSP) are both practicing Zambian film producers and budding film producers. While the European film festival is meant to showcase European films and African films produced with EU assistance, it is important to also empower Zambians with skills to enable them to produce top-quality films.

We hope you will join us at the European Film Festival 2004!
