Mazabuka Mumblings
MAZ GOES DIGITAL - By now the long awaited digital telephone system
should be firmly in place in Mazabuka, finally bringing it in line
with the rest of the country. Zamtel assures us that the system
will be a lot more efficient and even a tad cheaper !! New Zamtel
Mazabuka numbers now begin with 03 and then the number - which will
be a six digit affair beginning with 2. A great plus to the new
system is that emails SHOULD be a lot quicker. Yipee (or Yahoo
perhaps)! All great news for a brighter, better connected future
for Mazabukans.
TWAZABUKA - Means "we have crossed" in Tonga (Mazabuka has a similar
meaning) and this is the very apt name that Ticklays have given
their new Take Away and Cafe on the opposite side of the street to
their old fast food outlet on the main Livingstone road in Maz. The
restaurant is clean and tidy and the food fresh and tasty.
Twazabuka has an outside catering unit that can provide meals and
refreshments for large crowds and which, in our experience, has
always been quick, efficient and reasonably priced.
MUSIKILI SCHOOL - has very kindly donated a portion of the money
raised at the sponsored golf day which was held earlier this year,
to the Ndekeleni Development Foundation's Pre-School For Orphans
fund. The school, which will be erected close to the present Ndeke
Community School for Orphans will cater for 250 destitute children
in the community. Donations to the fund can be made by contacting
Sister Angela Daly on 03 230479 or Glenda Thompson on 03 230025 -

Also as a fund raiser for the school, Musikili's Board of Directors
held a Cattle Sale at Ant and Mary Collett’s farm last month. The
School received tremendous support from both the Mazabuka community
and from further afield, with a variety of livestock, including
eighty head of cattle being donated for the sale . Sincere and
grateful thanks, from the school, go to all concerned, particularly
to Ant and Mary, for this wonderful effort.
School Promotions continue, with meetings having taken place in
Choma and Lusaka last month and one coming up in Kariba shortly.
Musikili is working hard to attract new pupils and the School is
certainly worth a visit for parents who may want their children to
join them. THE MUSIKILI SCHOOL ART EXHIBITION - is due to be held
on October 8 at the Lusaka Museum.
Helping people to help themselves is the PEOPLES ACTION FORUM which
has been in operation for four years in Mazabuka and operates in
six other districts throughout Zambia. They are funded by various
donor organisations, one being Rotary who have helped raise money
for a water and sanitation programme in Nega Nega which is situated
34 km from Mazabuka. The project has been running for a year and is
facilitated by the Ministry of Education and Health and the Mazabuka
Council. The same project trains masons and pump mechanics and is
also rehabilitating all water points at Nega Nega. The Nega Nega
and Kabobola Communites run three community schools for vulnerable
children (orphans and children from one parent families) and PAF
trains the teachers and sources school materials. Informal adult
education classes are held twice a week at Nega Nega with
facilitators who trained at PAF's headquarters in Lusaka.
PAF's project co-coordinator is Janet Nyoni and she can be contacted
on e.mail

PAF also run a Guiding course in community schools and hold HIV
awareness programmes within the community.
GOLF - Thanks to the new irrigation system, the course has never
looked better and it's great to see people from around the country
coming to try it out! Several Lusaka clubs are affiliated to the
Mazabuka club and we look forward to seeing more players from there,
but more especially, more of our own members on the course! A news
flash from Mazabuka's Rodney Mundia who was given a scholarship to
study and play golf in the states is that he has been selected as an
"Ambassador of Amateur Golf representing young golfers of Zambia" by
the President of the Young Golfers of America, Marvin Finlay.
Rodney joins fellow ambassadors representing countries from around
the world who will help acquire Golfing scholarships for the youth
in their countries. A great honour for Rodney, his club and his
country. |
