Amnesty Week for Wild Animals

November 15th - 21st.

Keeping Wild Animals as Pets, without a Certificate of Ownership, is Illegal and Cruel and contravenes the Zambian Wildlife Act, No. 12 of the 1998 and is punishable by a fine or even imprisonment or both.

In light of the above, the Zambia Wildlife Authority is offering an opportunity for individuals and companies, living within the Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe areas, to bring their wild pets forward without fear of retribution.  Any wild animals, (that includes baboons, vervet monkeys, duikers, genets, civets, tortoises or birds), that are currently being kept as pets can be handed in to ZAWA’s partner, the Munda Wanga Wildlife Park and Sanctuary or by contacting one of the following numbers Munda Wanga on 01 278-456 or their Cop0perbelt rep on 02 612-964

Five years ago, Munda Wanga Zoo and Botanical Gardens (Chilanga) was leased to a newly formed Trust by the Zambia Wildlife Authority.   Following years of rebuilding and restructuring, Munda Wanga now has the capacity to support the wildlife of Zambia, by providing sanctuary for orphaned, injured or confiscated animals.  Those that can be returned to the wild, will be, through ongoing release programmes.

It is also an offence to possess or sell/buy game trophies or body parts without adequate licences / permits.  The Zambia Wildlife Authority has the right to confiscate and persecute anyone in possession of wild animal skins, mounted heads, ivory, bones or similar body parts, if found without licences/permits.   It is against this background that the Zambia Wildlife Authority - Chilanga would like to offer those in possession of such game trophies the opportunity to purchase the appropriate licences from the Zambian Wildlife Authority.

Munda Wanga would like to take opportunity to thank Bwana Mkubwa Mining Limited for agreeing to sponsor the posters and flyers for the Amnesty Week and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation for agreeing to assist with logistical support during the Amnesty Week.  For further information regarding the programme please contact Munda Wanga on 01 278-456 or e-mail us on sanctuary@zamnet.zm
