Taking Lusaka By Storm

The first week of March will see a special family in Lusaka -  the Storms Family. Why special, because three talented musicians are all members of one family; a father who plays fantastic music with his two daughters: father Ger Storms - piano, daughter Annelies, 18 yrs old – flute and daughter Emmy, 16 yrs old – violin.

Ger Storms was born in 1943 in the south of the Netherlands. He studied at the School of Music in Maastricht and became a teacher in music at various schools. In that period he wrote several books for teaching music. Apart from his daily work he accompanies his two daughters Emmy and Annelies on piano.

Annelies Storms plays the flute and piano. After high school she was admitted to the Royal School of Music in the Hague, in 2003, to study for the profession of teacher in music. She is a member of the Viotta Youth Orchestra and performed with this orchestra in Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic.

Emmy Storms started to play the violin when she was only 5 years old. After only three years she was admitted to the preliminary training of the Royal School of Music in the Hague. In 2001, being 12 years old, she was admitted to the School of Music where Mrs Koosje van Haeringen is her principal teacher.

Emmy was successful and obtained the highest awards at several contests. She plays in the AKO orchestra of the School of Music and the Viotta Youth Orchestra. Her latest success was the Davina van Wely Concours 2005 in The Hague for young violin players. She obtained the highest award.

The music they play is a variety of classical music for flute and piano by Fauré and Ibert, classical Spanish music by Monti and De Sarasate for violin and piano, some gypsy music from the film 'Chocolat' and arrangements of popular jazz songs by Gershwin and other American composers.

The Netherlands Embassy is very pleased that they accepted the invitation to come to Zambia and treat music lovers to an extraordinary programme of music.

The concert will be held on 4 March at 7.30 pm. Tickets are available at the Netherlands Embassy, call 253819 or at the entrance.
