LEOPARDS ON THE PROWL.  Nakambala Leopards Football team have had a very successful start to the season, having played ten games, won eight and drawn two.   They are currently leading in the First Division with twenty six points, and their mission this year is to be promoted to Super League.  So far they have played and beaten: Livingstone Pirates, ZNS Green Bullets, Zamcoal Diggers, Lusaka City Council, Profund Warriors, Young Buffaloes, Nampundwe, and Kascol Rangers.  A spokesman for Leopards says that with the new Coach, Christopher "Gaza" Tembo, the new Team Manager, Innocent Masumba and a number of new faces in the Leopard's executive on board, the team is focused to achieve their goal!

NEW AT MOORINGS!

The ever popular Moorings Campsite which is situated 11 km north of Monze (or 50 km south of Maz) on Tom and Thea Savory's farm, now boasts two very comfortable and reasonably priced ensuite chalets - one sleeping two and the other a four bedded affair.  This secure and peaceful little spot  is the perfect stop over, not only for people travelling  to and from Livingstone or Lusaka, but also for people wanting to take an early morning trip into Lochinvar National Park, only 50 km down the road, and home of the Kafue Lechwe, and an Ornithologist's  paradise  with over 400 bird species in residence. The camp itself is a bird watchers delight (for those in the know, Moorings is in the 1642B Chivuna quarter) and we came across grey hornbill and African hoopoe nesting sites and were told that a Wahlberg's Eagle also nests close to camp.  Red necked falcon can be spotted scurrying across pathways leading off from the camp and lilac breasted and racket tailed rollers were seen flitting through the shady acacia trees at the site.  Facilities at Moorings include very clean ablution blocks, a bar and dining area and a volleyball court.  Catering can be done on request and there is a little braai area beside each chalet.  Camping costs in the region of US$5.00 pppn and the chalets a modest US$20.00 pppn.  Contact the Savory's on tsavory@zamnet.zm or phone them on 097 863-241 for more information.

ALL ABOARD THE MWANACHINGWALA!

In August last year, Mazabuka residents were treated to an extraordinary spectacle.  An enormous boat – so big, that  power lines had to be disconnected to allow it to pass underneath, and traffic had to be diverted to give this massive water monster space to be towed through the streets – was on its way to a new home,  the Kafue River. It is currently berthed in the river beside Chief Mwanachingwala’s village.

The boat was purchased from an organization in Kariba by the Mwanachingwala Conservation Trust and has been aptly named “Mwanachingwala”.  It will be used to explore the tourist potential on the Kafue River in  the Mwanachingwala Conservation Area (MCA).  The MCA is a major part of the Kafue Flats Wetlands which is one of the world’s premier wetlands habitats.  Human activity has seen a massive decline in the wildlife population in this area over the years, and with funding from the DOEN Foundation in the Netherlands, a re-stocking programme was undertaken in Mid 2004.  Zambia Sugar, along with other local people in  the private sector in Mazabuka, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), are involved  in helping to rehabilitate the Wetlands, and this includes re establishing  lost species like the Kafue lechwe, the eland, zebra, and wildebeest.

A small harbour and jetty are under construction by Zambia Sugar below their P2 pump station to house the boat.  As well as being a boost to tourism in the area, it is hoped that the Mwanachingwala will also serve as an environmental educational tool and a medical facility for the local population.  The intended “day trip” route of the houseboat will be from its berth at P2 pump station through the MCA to the Blue Lagoon in Lochinvar National Park and back.

On the tourist front, the boat which can sleep eight people (plus the crew of 2) could also be used as a floating conference facility licenced (this is currently underway)  to take fifteen people.   Managing the accommodation and catering side of the Mwanachingwala, is ESS, who are part of  the Compass Group – the world’s largest out sourced food management company.  At present, ESS Zambia, under the local directorship of Patrick Koenig, manages all food, beverage and accommodation requirements for contractors and guests to Zambia Sugar.
