The Unknown Wild Beauty of Zambia

‘Spirit of the Land’ Exhibition at Gallery Gear

A selection from the successful ‘Spirit of the Land’ landscape photography exhibition will be shown at the Gallery Gear gallery from Saturday 4 June (see Wot’s Happening for details).  The exhibition has been arranged in response to demand for further showings and for limited edition prints of the work.

'Spirit of the Land' is a personal project by Kitwe-based photographer Stephen Robinson, commenced in 2003. It aims to document the landscape of Zambia, especially its unknown, remote landscapes - but also its better-known scenes -  in a distinct style.

The project uses a wide angle, panoramic format, which the photographer believes replicates more closely the way the human eye explores and takes in a scene.  The photographs are presented just as they were viewed in-camera by the photographer's eye – full frame, without cropping or enlargement.

By use of an unusual format in this way, the photographer aims to give the viewer some idea of the ‘feel’ of a landscape; of ‘being there’; and of the natural landscape’s emotive power.

The results of the first year of work on this project were premiered at a major solo exhibition in mid-2004 in Lusaka, supported by the cultural arm of the French Government, and in Livingstone.  Over 1000 people visited the exhibition, which met with an overwhelming response and considerable interest in limited edition, archival prints of the photographs.  Since then, examples of the project work have been exhibited in collective exhibitions and art galleries & auctions, with similar response and demand. The project continues as new work is added from all parts of Zambia.

New work in the project will be exhibited in Livingstone in July and in Lusaka in November – watch Lowdown for details. The Gallery Gear exhibition will be open daily (except Sundays) until 18 June.
