Oxford And Cambridge To Compete On The Zambezi

Following the highly successful Centenary Regatta held at the Victoria Falls in October last year, Oxford and Cambridge crews will be returning to the Zambezi in September in an attempt to turn the tables on the leading South African universities.  Last year Rhodes and Rand Afrikaans Universities, just weeks after their South African Boat Races, narrowly defeated Oxford and Cambridge Men and Women to record an historic win in the Zambezi Centenary Regatta. This was held at Livingstone to celebrate 100 years of organised water sport on the Zambezi.

This year, the Livingstone 150th Anniversary Regatta will be held on 24 and 25 September as part of the celebrations to mark the 150 years since Dr Livingstone first sighted, following a fairly long canoe trip down the Zambezi,  the Victoria Falls.

The Regatta will form part of the official celebrations, and is organised by Primary Sponsorship Ltd, a leading UK sports marketing company, and the River Club of Livingstone, a lodge on the Zambezi, run by Peter Jones.

Says Richard Fishlock, Chief Executive of Primary Sponsorship, and ex Oxford and Olympic rower, “Sun International has generously agreed to sponsor the accommodation for the competitors at the Zambezi Sun Hotel.  We are now looking for additional sponsors to help fund the venture by coming in behind the event itself, or sponsoring the Oxford and Cambridge crews or the South Africans.  Last year we achieved superb media coverage, including the BBC, CNN, South African and Zambian television stations … and German television who needed to understand why the Brits wanted to organise a regatta on such a dangerous stretch of water.  This year’s event promises to be very exciting with Oxford and Cambridge crews determined to reverse last year’s results, and to mix it with local athletes in competitive raft racing.  The Oxford and Cambridge crews also want to assist the local Livingstone secondary schools in the most appropriate ways”

Any parties interested in sponsoring this event should contact Richard Fishlock at Primary Sponsorship Ltd, Aristotle House, Aristotle Lane, Oxford, OX2 6TR, +44 1865 310-319, psl.ltd@lycos.co.uk or Peter Jones at the River Club, Livingstone, peterjones@wilderness.co.zm or visit www.zambezi-regatta.com.  If you are interested in attending the Regatta, contact Peter Jones.
