Bowled Over
This October is
going to be a good month for cricket lovers, with two major
tournaments taking place in
Lusaka.
The first is a
3-day 20/20 Cricket Festival from 7 to 9 October. Competing in this
festival will be teams from LSCC, Mkushi, Choma, Mpongwe, Chisamba
and a Barbarian Team. As the participating players are predominantly
from the agricultural sector, this will be combined with a
mini-agricultural exhibition.
The teams are
being sponsored by six main sponsors (ATS Agrochemicals, National
Milling, Omnia, Saro Agriculture, Seedco and The FAT Team (Greenbelt
Fertilizers, Cropserve, Midrange Transport and Global Logistics))
and part of the sponsorship includes the provision of cricket kit.
General Sponsorship has also been provided by other local
agriculture-focused businesses who will be participating in the
exhibition.
If you are in
the area of the Lusaka South Country Club, play starts on Friday 830
am sharp, all day Saturday and Sunday will see the play offs and the
final, interspersed with a skydive by Airborne, prize-giving and the
draw of the Sponsor’s prize (2 nights for 4 people at Msaku ‘Mbezi)
donated by Lower Zambezi Safari’s. Food and drink (a fully stocked
bar) will be available over the three day period.
The second
event is the annual triangular tournament between Sri Lanka, England
and South Africa. It is, we understand, the only sporting event in
Zambia from which all the proceeds are dedicated to a deserving
charity. This years’ tournament will be played on 30 October, also
at the Lusaka South Country Club.
This tournament
always attracts a large crowd which watches exciting cricket,
partakes of Sri Lankan cuisine prepared at the grounds and generally
participates in the merriment and fun. Sponsored by Stanbic Bank,
Zambian Breweries, Zambia Bottlers, Shoprite, Action Auto and Armcor,
this tournament is also ‘aired’ on television.
Through the
years, many charitable causes have benefited from the largesse
generated from the tournament. To date, a sum in excess of K 250
million has been raised and part of the proceeds are also donated
every year to the Zambia Cricket Union for the development of
cricket in Zambia.
Join them on 30
October and treat yourself and your family to a heady mix of
cricket, curry and music. All in the name of charity. |
