Summering Up  The beginning of summer came early this year in Maz and there has been total confusion amongst the fruit trees.  Mangos are trying desperately to please their consumers by dropping off the trees in varying stages of ripe or not-so-ripeness. Guavas aren't too sure what's going on either and this is likely to be a lean year for jelly makers. Mulberries and strawberries are keen to get going but their efforts are being thwarted by the resident Toppy (Bulbul) population.  The weather has also affected the sports scene, golf particularly, as the grass on the golf course has struggled to make a meaningful appearance on the fairways.  There also hasn't been a single trace, this year, of  those dear little pink everlasting flowers that have fairy communes living amongst them. The fairies are usually spotted after a few hours spent at the 19th (you don't need a torch, they're luminous!!)  Polo finished a while back - a quiet polo season this year.    Motorcross ended in a terrific cloud of dust at the end of August - great turnout at the National event that took place at the Turf Club. Football has continued to keep players and spectators alike firmly on their toes - or heels (never sure with football) .  Our famous big cats, the Nakambala Leopards look set for the Super League!.  After week 26 and their win over the stubborn Kascol FC, things are looking promising for the lads.

The topic of summer is never complete without mention of that famous four letter word, DIET! Yup, the minute the jerseys and track suits come off the discussions start.  Will it be the famous Atkins, Weight Watchers or Weighless??  Whatever!  Something to consider, mull over and possibly try out is eating right for your blood type.  According to the author of the book by that name (on sale in most book shops at Manda Hill and Arcades), there has to be an explanation why some people are able to lose weight on particular diets, while others are not.  Our blood types, according to author Dr. Peter J.D’Adamo,   determine our susceptibility to illness, which foods to eat and how to exercise.  It is a factor of our energy levels, the efficiency with which we burn calories, and our emotional response to stress and perhaps even our personality! Briefly, Type A does poorly on high protein diets (so no meat but loads of veg. proteins).  Type O’s thrive on high protein (loads of meat and dairy) Type B is pretty lucky as they can eat almost anything within reason and type AB have also got to watch their meat intake.  It all makes loads of sense once you get into it.

Ringing Bells  For Junior Sport  Once again – for the sixth year running – Bell equipment kindly sponsored the very popular and well attended Under 14 sports day at Nakambala stadium in mid September.  Bells have recognised that sport is one of the finest ways to keep children busy, happy, healthy and out of mischief and it is their way of helping to put something back into the Mazabuka community.  There was something for everyone – athletics, netball, drama, poetry, boxing, football and volleyball.  It was also great to see handicapped children participating.  Four deaf and dumb children from Mulonga Township performed  a little play on the dangers of pulling sugarcane off the back of cane trucks and won the prize in the drama category for their efforts.  AIDS and the prevention thereof was the main topic for the poems and also for the drama groups.  Hopefully this generation of children will practise what they preach.
