Hippo Mine -
Mystery No. 2 Solved
In
the September issue of The Lowdown we left you with the three
mysteries of
Hippo Lodge.
Mystery no. 2 has been solved, or so we have been told. Mr Misheck
Mapani, President of the Mungaila Farmers’ Association of Namwala
had this to say.
On
13 September I came across a Lowdown magazine. After reading the
contents I got interested in the mystery stories of Hippo Lodge.
It
was here where I read about a Brahman bull which survived wildness.
Another mystery to me was that this same bull branded NM/C belonged
to my uncle, Mr Weley Mallaba Chikwayi. This bull was given to
another farmer for breeding in Ithezithezi District. However, upon
arriving there, it ran into the bush and they failed to control it.
I
am told a report was given to the ZAWA officials there since the
bull ran into the park. As a layman, I appreciate the Lowdown
organisation for such a wonderful coverage of events in our country.
Imagine, ZAWA still is supposed to conserve; it is destroying. I
hope ZAWA will co-operate in this matter because people are
concerned about this negative attitude it has been portraying.
Many times, wild animals from parks stray in our areas, but we
cannot just destroy; we report to ZAWA. We even tolerate crocodiles
which kill our people and animals.
Mr
Mapani told The Lowdown that the bull had been purchased by his
uncle from a well known Brahman breeder in Mazabuka, but as this
information came in as we were about to switch off the lights on
this issue, we have not had time to obtain any further details. We
understand that Mr Mapani will be taking this issue up with ZAWA
where once again a good breeding animal was not seen for its
potential to upgrade our national herd, but only as a piece of nyama,
to be eaten.
