GOLF NEWS  SOUTHERN LADIES REIGN SUPREME! Despite its attempt, of late, to compete with courses in the Sahara desert, Maz Golf Club bristled with life and activity on September 18 when lady golfers from around Zambia descended on the club for the annually contested North vs South competition, sponsored by Zambia Sugar. Thanks to golfing regulars, Chris Mpweto, Rabia Mundia, Margaret Masupha, Rita Namweene and other local ladies, and their Lusaka partners, the Southern Region ladies came out on top with a stunning 34 over 14 point victory!  Lusaka's teenage champ, Melissa Nawa helped to boost the points for the Southern ladies.   It's great to see young girls taking up golf, and Melissa and sixteen year old International Champ, Michelle Wie, are good role models for the female teenage set  there are more than enough for the males.

BARLOWORLD SPONSORED SEASONALS SPORTS DAY  During cane harvest, Zambia Sugar employs hundreds of seasonal workers, both men and women, to help out with irrigation, planting and general maintenance around the estate. This year, when they weren't working, cultivation seasonal workers were busy practising football, netball, singing, running and tug-o-war for their  sponsored day on October 2.  A Barloworld  team came down to Zambia Sugar's Nakambala stadium from Lusaka to watch the day's events and they also took part in the tug-o-war (a tie) and soccer (a walkover from Zambia Sugar's side of “old men”).  Barloworld's Human Resources Manager, Maud Malambo who was Guest of Honour on the day, took the opportunity during her visit to present local charity, Ndekeleni Development Foundation, a centre of hope for widows and orphans in the community, with a cheque to go towards building their own self help centre and workshop at Ndeke Township in Mazabuka.
