Quick Getaway Spot

By Glenda Thompson

Mazabuka has become a temporary residence centre for so many different folk over the last few years, including contractors, travelling businessmen, extended family members et al!  There is always the problem of what to do with visitors while they’re here.  Apart from golf,  there is not a great deal going on in the vicinity of dear old Maz so the obvious solution is to find a getaway spot that is close enough to get to over a weekend.  Kiambi Lodge is one such place and is the first lodge/camp on the Lower Zam.  It only takes two hours (+ -) to get to from Maz.  The lodge is in a perfect spot, overlooking the Zambezi/Kafue confluence.  We went specifically for the fishing and didn’t expect to see any game as it is not in the game management area or the national park.  However we saw more ele’s there than we have before at the lodges close to the park which is about 50 kms downstream.  Also saw Buff and a few antelope and masses of hippo.

Food good and not too much – loads of good veg and salads and lovely steak and fish dishes. Also very impressed with the fact that they had a gym!!! It’s situated down by the jetty overlooking the river so one can while away the time and the fat on the exercise bike, walker or weights unit whilst watching hippo wallowing in the distance.

Kiambi sleeps 16 but they have just opened a self catering lodge – sleeps six – where one can opt for self catering or full board.  The house is well kitted out and sleeps six comfortably.  It is right between the camp site and the lodge accommodation and has its own swimming pool and bar lounge (with flat screen TV) and pool table.  The camp site is in a lovely cool glade and a large crowd could take over the house and part of the camp site if need be.  Very reasonable at US$120 for the house (sleeps six) and US10 per person for the camp site.  Boats on hire from the lodge at US$ 55 per half day. Full board is US$68 pppd;  Canoeing trips – sleeping out on islands etc – US$80 per day.  So all in all a pretty reasonable spot.  Their email address is kiambi@coppernet.zm
