HAPPY NEW YEAR to us all.  May we all prosper and be healthy which prompts the first item...

Big apologies (for what could be termed a typing error but which in fact, if I am totally honest, was not) to Mars Zambia and Mars International.   We reported in November that Mars International had re-opened their Choma

Clinic.   This should be Mars Zambia, the clinic is solely owned and run by them. For those not in the know, Mars/Health International Group Ltd is an International Service Organisation registered in Guernsey providing members with medical and personal services in the case of illness and/or bodily injury.   The product is known as Mars International.  Apologies to all concerned.

Local (and other Zambian) residents will be saddened to hear that Isobel Barkley died in England recently.  We wish to remember her here in this column.  She was born in Broken Hill (Kabwe) and spent the greater part of her life in this country apart from a brief spell in Salisbury during WW2, where she met her husband George.   After some years in Mazabuka she and George opened up their farm in Muzoka, some 30 kms north of Choma. George managed the Grain Marketing Board whilst Isobel kept the home fires burning and brought up their two children Tony and Penny. During the seventies and eighties, they managed, together, the old Tobacco Co-op on the corner in Choma until George's death, when Isobel moved down to Zimbabwe to be near Tony.  Recently she moved to England to be near her daughter. Her life reflected her generation's best qualities of strong work ethic, great loyalty and warmth to family and friends, dignity and integrity. She is remembered with great respect and affection.

Our Local government gave us our best Christmas present this year....thank you for the wonderful work being done on our town roads.  What a huge difference it makes to our lives and a visit to Zamtel to pay the bill no longer risks a broken exhaust or springs and no more fuming drivers. We are also grateful for moving the busses from the Post Office area, which had become a Dangerous Area.

After the great success of Tom Jones at Gwembe recently (big vote of thanks to the Brooks Family) we hear that Elvis is due to appear here in February. No dates at this time.

Travelling to Lusaka on business etc. is often a headache of where to stay unless one has family or friends to park upon (and do they really enjoy us loading their fridges and spaces with all our shopping!)   The problem is now solved with the opening of Khaki and Dust Guest House, a home from home situated in Chipovu Road near Rhodes Park.   Very central with CFB Clinic and Livestock Services two minutes away, Manda Hill, five minutes.   The house is fully staffed with five bedrooms, mostly ensuite; good safe parking; fridge to leave your perishables in and swimming pool and garden.  Contact Sharon on 097 616-079 for bookings.

Choma Garage are now agents for DHL, paperwork to be completed at the Mini Market.

All for now!
