Mazabuka Mumblings
MUSIKILI, HELPING LOCAL CHARITIES :
Over
the past eighteen months, various functions have been organised and
run by the Musikili School PTA to help raise money for local
charities in the district. This year, three needy organisations
were the lucky recipients of donations from them. They included the
Mazabuka Association for the Disabled, the Mbaya Musuma Clinic and
Orphanage and the Ndekeleni Development Foundation, the Centre of
Hope for Widows and Orphans in the Mazabuka Community. When she
received the cheque on behalf of Ndekeleni, Chairperson Rita
Nyirenda thanked PTA chairman, Brian Pinkney, and said that through
their Home Based Care visits, her committee had identified two
teenage girls who were unable to continue their education as there
was no longer a bread winner in the family. The donation from
Musikili would go towards scholarships for the girls, Caroline
Malamo and Eneless Simango, to attend St. Paul’s tailoring school
for the next two years. During their breaks, the girls will be
employed in Ndekeleni’s tailoring project.
MUSIKILI GOLF SPONSORED GOLF DAY :
This
extremely popular day is being held this year on Saturday, June 3.
More details in the next issue.
GUAVA
LIQUEUR FACTORY OPENING :
Finally there’s something more exciting– apart from the standard old
jellies jams and stews – that’s happening to the ubiquitous (at this
time of year) guava. It is going to be turned into a liqueur, right
here in Mazabuka!! At the beginning of April, ex Brazilian soccer
player and now high powered international businessman, Marcos
Aurerero will be opening the doors of his Mazuava Factory, situated
on the old Club road. It’s such a great idea to have a liqueur
factory right on the doorstep of a sugar estate!! Incidentally, did
you know that the guava is one of the richest fruits in vitamins A
and C and a study in India showed that it is excellent for lowering
blood pressure and hyper tension, eaten raw, that is!
POT
HOLES – ALMOST HISTORY : The main roads in Mazabuka have undergone
a dramatic face lift over the last few months. Despite the rains,
contractors have plodded on trying to resurface some of them, but
many are still in desperate shape and we hope that the long term
plan will be to de-pot-hole all of them!
MAZABUKA GOLF COURSE – An update on the golf course is that it’s in
pretty good shape generally, although it’s a good idea to avoid the
rough at all costs. Masses of sponsored competition coming up, once
the new committee is in place.
