Mazabuka Mid Year Happenings…

So much has been “happening” lately in Mazabuka : never a dull moment!!  What with cycling : a national event held in May and another in June. Cricket : three matches have been played by a Mazabuka Club side against other country district teams – and Maz has fared pretty well, considering the number of rusty memory banks with regard to anything that vaguely resembles the game! SOCCER – aside from the World Cup, there’s also been the on-going challenge that the Nakambala Leopards Soccer Team have had to face now that they’re in the Premier League.  The “Sweet Boys” haven’t fared too well lately so we hope they’ll pick up steam in their future matches! Golf - thanks to Musikili School’s PTA for the well organised, well attended golf sponsored day at the beginning of June!  Incidentally, sub. reminders have gone out to all our farmer members and they can pay their subscriptions straight into the account that deals specifically with the maintenance of the course.  It’s good to see that our lady captain, Chris Mpweto has been placed second in the Bronze Division’s Order Of Merit!  Tennis has picked up again and there’s usually a good crowd at the tennis club on a Saturday afternoon.  Ladies tennis on Wednesday has also been going well.  Don’t forget your tennis club subs. if you haven’t paid them yet.  The Mazabuka Open Polo Championships are being held over the weekend of July 22 at Maz Turf club.  Earlier, on July7, 8 and 9 a divisional match is being played at Lubombo.

On a sombre note, in mid June, a mass demonstration against sexual violence against children was held in Maz. A huge crowd of demonstrators marched from the hospital to the Civic Centre to protest  the number of cases of child molestation in the district.  There was an appeal for more stringent laws against rapists, and against traditional healers who advocate the molestation of children as a “cure to poverty”. It was acknowledged that there should be a massive sensitisation programme on the subject of child molestation, and the ruling that rape/defilement carries a 15 years to life imprisonment be adhered to.
