Coming
Up – The usual August wind that heralds in the spring – or hurls
in the summer! ….
Polo
season draws to a close at this time of the year. The last big
match in Maz is the Mazabuka Open which was held on July 22/23 this
year (not sure of the result at this stage). Lilayi is the venue
for the International on August 4,5 and 6. Mazabuka is the place to
be for the huge
Moto-X
event that takes place over the weekend of August 18. Taking part
in this event will be Maz’s very own Zambian Champion, David Reeve,
the top Moto x rider in the country this year!
Tennis:
ladies every Wednesday afternoon, and mixed on a Saturday – for
members. The Tennis Club’s fund raising Winter Ball that was
organised by the Group 4 ladies in mid July was a rollicking
success. Money raised will help decorate the club’s hall.
Golf
– the next big event on the calendar is the Mazabuka Ladies Open
which is being held on October 1 this year. We need as many local
participants as possible – both to play and to help out in any way
they can with this tournament.
Soccer:
Nakambala Leopards will be playing home games against Konkola Blades
on August 16 and Zesco United FC on September 2.
Cricket
– The last game that our cricketing stalwarts played was against the
very strong Lusaka South team, and we are pretty sure that it was
only due to the M factor (Maz’s Marcus and Miles, who play for the
Lusaka team on a regular basis) that we lost!
Zubie’s Gym
– This is a great time to get rid of those winter rolls, and the
place to leave the flab behind is at Zubie Bhagoo’s new, state of
the art gym! Aerobics and circuit classes are held on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings and on Tuesday and Thursday
afternoons. Phone Zubie on 03 230-010 for more info.
Delicious Visitors From Down Under!
– So there we were, minding our own business and fishing happily on
the Kafue, when who should come staggering out of the reeds and up
the bank towards us waving his spiny feelers and threatening us with
his wicked looking claws, but a dirty great Yabby! Freshwater
crayfish, Euastacus spp, Yabby’s - call them what you like, they’re
a huge menace to Zambia’s indigenous fish (they eat the fry and the
eggs), but they’re a delicious feast, if you can find enough of
them. The crayfish originate from Australia where there are several
different species (the largest has a carapace measuring 150 mm in
length) and they breed prolifically. The fishermen on the Kafue
River are constantly catching the cray’s in their nets and because
they have no use for them, they throw them back! We
persuaded them to keep the cray’s in a bucket for us and then took
them home, let them purge in clean water for 24 hours before popping
them into a pot of boiling salty water. Cook them for ten minutes,
cool them off with icy water, remove the shells (like taking off a
crab’s shell) and steam them for a bit before eating them. Dipped in
garlic butter or chopped in a salad with homemade mayonnaise they
are really scrumptious!
