Reintroduction Of An Endangered Species : The Return Of An Old
Friend.
By Marek Patzer
After a
fifteen year hibernation the Black Lechwe magazine is back on the
shelves in Zambia. For those that don’t know, the Black Lechwe
magazine is the journal of this country’s oldest conservation NGO;
The Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia,
formed way back in 1953. The newly resurgent Society is a
membership-based charity with a laudable (and award winning) track
record in environmental education, fund raising and lobbying.
The new Black
Lechwe, resplendent in full-colour livery and quality content was
enthusiastically hailed at the well-attended re-launch at Chit Chat
in Lusaka on Friday the 4 August. A dash of speeches, a ‘Birding
with Bob’ slide presentation, delicious snacks and flowing wine all
added to a festive atmosphere and best wishes for what should be a
long and productive life for the Black Lechwe.
The Black
Lechwe is not only a “damn good read” but also THE environmental
mouthpiece for Zambia; “…a powerful instrument of advocacy”
according to Society President, Adam Pope, “…and proof that the
Society is a force to be reckoned with”. A challenging statement
backed-up by ambitious plans to turn the WECSZ website into a
lobbying platform stimulating local, regional and international
awareness of Zambian environmental realities.
The WECSZ
would like to thank those that contributed to the successful
re-launch of the Black Lechwe; Margaret Thompson, Annie at
Kilimanjaro Cafe, SJ at Spar Arcades, the Zambia Ornithological
Society and Family Favourite. |
