One Year Of The
Gecko
It has now been a
year since the gecko first made its imprint on this page.
There were
promises made then and these were many.
But looking back
over the year, the gecko ponders – how many of these have been
fulfilled.
Was it not the
gecko that said, it would be on every wall of every house,
workplace, hotel, lodge and even State House observing every
activity lest the devil gets away with it?
Was it not the
Gecko that said it would reveal all that came its way?
That was then and
12 months on, the Gecko is proud to say that – what was promised has
been delivered. In as much as the Gecko would like to write about
itself, more pressing issues come to the fore.
Take the instance
of elections. The polls came and went.
Promises were
made and one wonders how many of those will be kept.
If a Gecko on its
part can keep a promise, what more of the politician? How many of
these politicians will keep the pact made with the electorate.
How many times
will the people be lied to?
New schools,
hospitals, roads and many other social amenities were promised. But
how many of these will be seen taking root?
Those who seek
political office need to be humane, they need to have compassion,
compassion to serve especially those less fortunate than themselves.
This should be
the sole driving force : to serve.
The Gecko has
been on the wall of a children’s hospital ward and seen the
‘slaughter’ of the innocent little ones just because there are no
drugs.
Can you imagine a
healthy woman bleeding to death after giving birth simply because
there was no doctor to stop the bleeding?
Or the police
letting an overloaded and defective truck through a check-point,
only to learn later that this same vehicle rammed into a bus killing
all on board?
What of a defiler
who is left to walk free just because he mixes in the right social
places and eats from the same table as those in high office?
But these are
promises that the average politician must have given during the
campaigns and now that some of them have made it into HIGH OFFICE,
what next?
Those who have
been given a platform must be made to account for their actions. Now
and again, systems must be employed to check on them.
But this rarely
happens.
After an
election, for many, life reverts to the usual : they go about their
daily chores and wait until the next poll date.
There is need to
change things and the Gecko has led the way by accounting for all
the promises made when this article first hit this page.
The politician is
no different. It is people who put the politician into office and it
is to the people that he/she must be accountable to.
