The Magic Of “Madonna” Returns To Zambia

Five years ago at The Intercontinental Hotel the then British High Commissioner, Tom Young, endured, very sportingly, a lap dance by Madonna. Not the Madonna you understand, but a Madonna. Sarah Devonshire, as 'The Immaculate Deception', wowed the ballroom that night with not only her slightly risque antics but also renditions of Madonna's songs that set the benchmark for future Intercon Gala balls. She was, quite simply, amazing. 'Dinner with Madonna' was a night that many will remember fondly for many reasons!

And she's coming back! Not merely as Madonna, which she will reprise for part of her set, but also Anastasia and Cher. In addition she will be treating the Gala evening ticket holders to a very special act called The Little Big Voice based on the Jane Horrocks character in the film Little Voice (which also starred Michael Caine). In that film a reclusive girl is overheard singing film standards in an attic by a sleazy agent and rises to stardom. Sarah's Little Big Voice set includes some of the songs in the film made famous originally by Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and others.

Sarah Devonshire started singing professionally over 15 years ago and has been ‘Madonna’ for about 10 of those years.  She has travelled all over the world and has performed for many huge audiences as well as intimate ones.  Sarah was even booked once by Madonna herself to travel through Heathrow and board a plane so that the paparazzi chased Sarah and not the real Madonna – it worked!!  In addition she made the last 60 of the first series of the BBC’s Fame Academy which, given the 2,500 entrants, was no mean feat!

Not only will audiences be treated once more to Sarah's amazing talent but also to her husband's! Since her last visit to Zambia Sarah has tied the knot to a young man called, wait for it, Merlin.

Merlin the Magician is a 29 year old performer with over 10 years of wizardry experience. His act includes juggling, balancing and unicycling but the core of his show is his unique brand of magic and illusion. He has performed for many of the major entertainment centres internationally including First Leisure, Rank, BCM and Pasha Nightclubs in Majorca and has been endorsed by some of the worlds leading entertainers such as Tim Burton who said “My family enjoyed your performance tremendously” and Roger De Courcey who said “a great speciality, great comedy and juggling, very skilful, very funny”

As well as his own act he has devised an act with his wife Sarah Devonshire aka Madonna/Cher/Anastasia whom he will be accompanying to Zambia in December this year for performances in aid of Kasisi Orphanage, Manda Hill Street Kids and the Rotary Club of Lusaka Children’s charities.

On Saturday 2 December, Sarah will be performing her full repertoire in aid of the above charities at the Grand Gala function at the Hotel Inter-Continental.  Sarah will be accompanied for part of her act by Merlin who will be integrating his act into her songs, as well as performing table magic. Tickets K175,000 per person inclusive of corkage.

On Sunday 3December, Merlin will be performing at The Polo Grill.  This will be a 45 minute family show, including Fire Swinging, Contact Juggling and Wizardry.  This will be great fun and an afternoon for all the family to enjoy.  At this function we will be bringing down as many children as we can from Kasisi Orphanage and two street kids organisations.  Hamburgers and Hot Dogs will be on sale and Sarahwill open and close the show with a couple of her most popular numbers.  Tickets K30,000 per adult, K20,000 per child.

For more details on the above shows and how to buy tickets please contact Margaret Andrews, George Donkin and Mairi Cummins  (see contact info in the Wot’s Happening section)

It is also anticipated that Sarah will perform one more show on Thursday 30 November at a venue yet to be confirmed but watch the local press for further details.
