Mazabuka Mutterings

Mazabuka, already known as "the sweetest place in the nation", is set to get a whole lot sweeter over the next two years, following the confirmation of the expansion of Zambia Sugar's Nakambala Estate due to begin this month. The project will see an additional 10 500 hectares of cane being planted by both the Estate and local growers, with the accompanying expansion of the factory's capacity to 440,000 tonnes sugar per year. Zambia Sugar board chairman, Graham Clark, stated that the project will be phased in over two years, with the first stage completed in time for the 2008/9 sugar season. The effects of the expansion are already being felt in Mazabuka - the demand for accommodation has increased significantly with many B&B's taking bookings for the next two years.

On a sporting note, both Lance Higgins and David Reeve from Mazabuka have been invited to compete in the Southern African Enduro Championships held in Namibia on 10 May. Lance and David are the current SAC Champions, and are both looking for sponsorship in the form of money, fuel, tyres or sparts. Any companies interested in sponsoring should contact the Mazabuka Motorcross Club on cell 097 826-928. The Jokers polo tournament was held at Lubombo on 14 and 15 April, and was a great success with 7 teams competing for the Cup, including players from Lilayi and Lusaka polo clubs. The nailbiting final was between the Blues (John Stubbs, Eric Stubbs, Jason Stubbs and Charmaine Coventry) and the Reds (Kevin Coventry, Lionel Coventry, Lilo Patterson and David Clayton) with the Reds finally claiming the victory.

Last but not least, Teija Lublinkhof from Munali Coffee is holding a Barista Competition to be held at Rhapsody's in Lusaka on Friday 27 (semifinals) and Saturday 28 April (finals). It should be a great competition to watch and is a great opportunity for local barista's to show off their talents, as well as a good way to showcase and promote Zambian coffee. Teija also organises barista courses for those who are interested in making their own cup of great coffee! For more details please contact Munali Coffee on 01 254-141.
