The Aylmer May Cemetery is situated on Lagos Road in Rhodes Park, Lusaka.

The Cemetery was officially opened in 1922 - named after Dr. Aylmer May, the country's first Chief Medical Officer - and was officially closed in 1958.

Over 1000 identifiable graves are located in the cemetery. (see the Directory Below)

The Cemetery is open to visitors every day from 7.00H to 17.00H except on Mondays when it is closed.

The Aylmer May Cemetery Restoration Trust was formed in 1999 and registered as a Charitable Organisation.

The general aims of the Trust were:

  • to form a working group comprising all the various religions and denominations represented in the cemetery: Anglican, Catholic, Dutch Reformed Church, Greek Orthodox, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim.

  • to take over the management and the maintenance of the cemetery from the Lusaka City Council.

  • to register the cemetery as a National Heritage Site.

  • to clean up the cemetery cite and to uncover and identify the graves.

  • to build a wall the length of the back of the cemetery plot and to erect a "proper" railing fence and gate along the Lagos Road frontage - this in order to secure the cite and to prevent further vandalism.

  • to rebuild and restore the Murray Memorial Chapel (1928) .

  • to design and build a Memorial Wall where ashes and mementos may be placed for those wishing to commemorate relatives and friends who may have died and/or been buried elsewhere.

  • to establish an Indigenous Tree Park (Arboretum).

  • to create an Archive of the records of the cemetery, develop a website and possibly a small booklet about some of the people buried there.

Most of the above aims have been successfully achieved or are in the process of completion. All have been achieved through financial and/or material donations, and by voluntary work by members of the Trust Board together with many friends of the cemetery.

The Trust Board/Working Group is made up as follows:
